As a Mercator Fellow, Bertram explores how responsible governance mechanisms can help secure more sustainable and globally equitable outcomes across the mining and value chains of critical resources for the energy transition. Against the backdrop of mounting geopolitical tensions, he contributes his expertise on China’s global role in supply chains and examines the impact of European ‘de-risking’ policies on countries of the Global South. Bertram holds a PhD in Political Science from Goethe University Frankfurt, specialising in Chinese development policy, and previously worked for the Mercator Institute for China Studies, the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the EU Delegation to China.
